During a meeting with the Meitei Christians (majority ethnic group of Manipur), Sangliana took note of last year's violence against three churches and promised to pressure the police to act on the villainy.
Sangliana was informed that three churches were burnt down on May 10, 2009, at Phayeng, Taothong and Phumlou. Properties worth about Rs 3 lakhs were burnt and damaged during the incident, he was told.
Sangliana was accompanied with a delegation of the Manipur State Minorities Commission led by its chairperson, A Halim Chowdhury, secretary MR Sheikh and others.
Besides the gutting down of churches, the Minorities Commission was also apprised of the serious human rights violations and lack of freedom of religion among minority groups.
